Dr. Gerard L. Coté is Regents Professor, James J. Cain Professor I, Associate Agency Director for the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), and Director of the Center for Remote Health Technologies and Systems (CRHTS) at Texas A&M University. He is an internationally recognized leader in biomedical sensing, wearable medical devices, digital health, and translational biomedical engineering. His research spans wearable physiological monitoring, biomedical optics, biosensors, point-of-care diagnostics, human performance technologies, artificial intelligence for physiological signal analysis, and next-generation remote patient monitoring systems.

Through the Optical Bio-Sensing Laboratory (OBSL), Dr. Coté leads multidisciplinary research to develop innovative wearable and handheld technologies that enable continuous, noninvasive monitoring of human health and performance. His team integrates advances in biomedical engineering, electronics, photonics, materials science, embedded systems, and machine learning to create next-generation medical devices that monitor cardiovascular health, chronic disease, metabolic disorders, tissue health, and other physiological biomarkers. These technologies are designed to improve clinical decision-making while expanding access to personalized, remote healthcare.

Dr. Coté has authored more than 450 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and book chapters, and his work has been cited more than 13,000 times by researchers worldwide. His research has been continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DoD), and numerous industry partners, resulting in innovations that have advanced biomedical sensing, digital health, and wearable medical technologies.

An accomplished inventor and entrepreneur, Dr. Coté holds numerous U.S. and international patents and has co-founded several successful medical technology companies, including BioTex, BasePair BioTechnologies, Visualase (acquired by Medtronic), and most recently, CardiaTex, a company focused on advancing next-generation wearable biosensors and noninvasive physiological monitoring technologies. His commitment to translating research into clinical practice continues to drive the development of technologies that improve patient care, human performance, and healthcare accessibility.

Dr. Coté is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and SPIE. His contributions to biomedical engineering have been recognized with numerous national and international honors, including the 2024 Texas A&M Chancellor’s Innovation Award and the 2024 SPIE Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award. Through his leadership of CRHTS and the Optical Bio-Sensing Laboratory, he continues to mentor the next generation of engineers and scientists while advancing technologies that are shaping the future of precision medicine, wearable healthcare, and remote patient monitoring.
